The Eternal Zero, by Naoki Hyakuta

Your grandfather was a coward.

That is the angry recollection with which a former Zero fighter pilot greets two Japanese siblings who, typically, despite being educated, know next to nothing about a defining war in the Pacific that took place within living memory. The testimony rattles and confuses aspiring lawyer Kentaro and newly minted journalist Keiko since virtually the only fact they’ve grown up hearing about Kyuzo Miyabe is that he died a kamikaze. When the young pair digs deeper into the man’s past, other surviving comrades only seem to confirm the verdict, but its very import begins to shift in surprising ways.

In addition to providing a window into the experiences of the losing side’s flyboys and a frank look at contemporary Japan’s amnesia regarding the war, this novel also undertakes a blistering critique of the folly and inhumanity of the Imperial Navy and Army and a nuanced exploration of the differences between kamikaze pilots and today’s suicide bombers. At its core, however, it is a mystery of sorts about a long-dead man’s actions and intentions and a reconfiguration of the meaning of wartime loyalty and sacrifice.

A debut novel that was published when the author was fifty, The Eternal Zero has become Japan’s all-time top-selling mass-market paperback and the basis of a blockbuster film of the same name.

Review
“On the surface, Naoki Hyakuta’s novel presents an intriguing mystery as two modern-day siblings try to uncover the character and circumstances of the death of their grandfather, who died as a kamikaze pilot… The novel brings humanity to the often faceless “enemy” in the realistic characters of the old soldiers who approach their past experiences in different ways.” —World Literature Today

Unique perspective from "the other side" of the war in the Pacific
By C. E. Stevens
The Eternal Zero is the story of a brother and sister who attempt to track down information about a man, Kyuzo Miyabe, whom they only recently learned to be their real grandfather, a man who died in the final days of the Pacific War. In the process of learning about this man, they (and by extension, the reader) slowly come to not only understand but love Miyabe, who is heroic without being the typical model of a "hero", a man who simply wants to survive the war and see his family again. Especially for the brother, who is the same age Miyabe was when he died, the experience is particularly transformative; for the reader, the contrast between these two young men and the different worlds they inhabit is striking. Meeting various veterans who knew their grandfather and listening to their tales, we see the Pacific Theater, and the various facets of Miyabe, through these men's eyes. Miyabe's grandchildren try to figure out who this man was: A hero? A coward? An ace pilot? A terrorist? A loving family man? A murderer? Too attached to life? Not attached enough? Selfish? Selfless? The questions are many, the answers are not so clear, even as the facts emerge.

Hyakuta does an excellent job of weaving his tale: one feels like they are in the cockpit along with Miyabe for the entire war from Pearl Harbor to the waning days of the war. We see what he sees, we feel what he feels ... all through the recollections and reactions of other men who knew him. It is easy for one to forget that this is a work of fiction, although one obviously modeled closely on real events and people. Although it is not a short book, it is gripping throughout. Especially as the end nears, and the "special attack units" (tokkotai, often known as the "kamikaze" in English) take on a more and more central role, the reader is compelled to read on with a growing mix of dread and anticipation. Hyakuta does not disappoint, with a couple of twists at the end (which I will not spoil!) that leave one moved by a myriad of emotions.

It is said that "history is written by the victors", and as a result, English-language speakers often only see one perspective on World War II, and the Pacific Theater in particular. That is too bad. The Eternal Zero is both a compelling story, and an invaluable insight into the Japanese perspective on the War in the Pacific. This book has been a phenomenal bestseller in Japan, with adaptations into a number of different media including a movie version. I'm glad the book has been translated into English, and I hope it does well. Even when the Japanese perspective is taken into account, it is usually from 30,000 feet--an observation of the economic and political trends that led up to the war, or to specific events like the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hyakuta's story is the inverse of this: through the tale of one man's war, we learn more broadly about World War II, and war itself more generally. A worthy journey, one I highly recommend.

Great book! I'll read it again!
By Jordan W.
This is a fantastic book for both the story and the adaptation from the Japanese version of the text. Anyone who is interested in WWII history, from a different perspective and neither glorifying war nor hating it, and enjoy a wonderful story, check this book out. This book is also set at an easy reading level.

Excellent story from the experiences and mindset of the Japanese ...
By Bill Abrams
Excellent story from the experiences and mindset of the Japanese during WWII. A brother and sister research their Kamikaze pilot grandfather participation during the war by interviewing pilots who served with him. I learned a lot reading this book, Very enjoyable.
