Every time I open this book, I keep praising the authors for their art. It looks impossible to cram so much information in such a little space. It contains information that sometimes you can't find in textbooks. I bought it for my ICU rotation, but since then I have been carrying it in my labcoat all the time.

Part 6 – Disney California Adventure – Cars Land

Cars land is the crowning capst one on DCA’s transformation, and the first major “land” in an American Disney theme park devoted solely to a single film franchise. Tucked in the park’s southeast corner on 12 acres of repurposed parking lot, Cars Land’s main entrance is across from the Golden Vine Winery, though there are secondary gateways in A Bug’s Land and in Pacific Wharf (the vista through the latter’s stone archway entrance is especially scenic). A massive mountainous backdrop topped with 125-foot high peaks patterned after 1950s Cadillac Pinnacle tail fins, known as the Cadillac Range, cradles Ornament Valley, home to a screen-accurate re-creation of Radiator Springs. That’s the sleepy single-stoplight town along Route 66 populated by Pixar’s anthropomorphized automobiles. Along its main drag, in addition to three rides, you’ll find eateries themed to the film’s minor characters and souvenir shops selling Cars-themed and Route 66 merchandise.

Cars Land represents a considerable investment in capital and creativity for the Disney company, resulting in a rare example of complete entertainment immersion. Walking through the aesthetically astounding area is uncannily like stepping into the cinematic universe, and well worth the wait even if you weren’t particularly enamored of the merchandise-moving movies. Since opening, the area has attracted massive crowds all day and has dramatically increased DCA’s overall attendance. As striking as Cars Land is by daylight, it is even more stunning after sunset; the nightly neon-lighting ceremony set to the doo-wop classic “Life Could Be a Dream” is a magical must-see (showtimes are not publicized but occur promptly at sundown, so ask a Cars Land cast member and arrive early). Finally, a word to the wise from a Dallas, Texas, family:

Tip: Cars Land has NO shade. Literally none. Wear a hat.

World of Color—Celebrate!
The Wonderful World of Walt Disney

DESCRIPTION AND COMMENTS
The 1,200 high-pressure water nozzles installed under the surface of DCA’s Paradise Bay are the infrastructure for Disney’s $75-million attempt to keep guests in the park (and spending money) until closing time. If you’ve seen or heard about the spectacular fountain show at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, World of Color—Celebrate! is similar but larger, with more special effects and themed to Disney movies.

Though the original version of World of Color was still wildly popular, in honor of Disneyland’s Diamond Anniversary, it was completely overhauled and given the new subtitle Celebrate! The Wonderful World of Walt Disney. This new special edition of World of Color is explicitly a tribute to Walt Disney, the man and his “dreams of Disneyland,” and incorporates classic animated images with live-action footage of Uncle Walt and a new musical score, along with clips from dozens of Disney films, attractions, and character
in its 22-minute performance.

The show’s backdrop includes Mickey’s Fun Wheel, fitted with special lighting effects for use in the show. Giant projection surfaces sculpted by sprayed water—even larger than those used in Fantasmic!—display custom-made animations, and flamethrowers spew almost enough heat to dry off guests standing in the splash zones. What’s most remarkable about the show is how the flashing colored lights and pulsating fountains combine to look like low-level fireworks. The effects are astounding, and the colors are
vibrant and deep.

World of Color—Celebrate! is hosted by stage and screen star Neil Patrick Harris, and boy, did Disney get their money’s worth with him. NPH (as he’s known to his fans) is in almost every scene of the show. If we had to rank the top four things you’ll see and hear in the show, it’s 1) water, 2) color, 3) Neil Patrick Harris, and 4) the word celebrate. Unfortunately, even if you’re a huge fan of his work as Doogie Howser, Barney Stinson, and/or Hedwig, Harris’s presence crosses the line from conducive host to obtrusive interloper, as he’s awkwardly inserted into stiffly animated sequences and made to sing a mediocre new theme song that isn’t nearly as catchy as the old “Wonderful World of Color” tune.

Updated Information - Very Helpful With Places to Stay and Things to Do

I have been to Disneyland too many times to count. I haven't been for the last few years due to a back surgery but am now planning a trip. I wanted to get some info that was up to date on places to stay, etc... There have been many changes in the last 6 years so I just wanted updated info. There were a couple of tips on places to stay that I found very helpful right off the bat. For someone who has never been or hasn't been in many years, I think this up to date info is well worth the purchase price.

I've been to Disneyland at least 20 times and Disneyworld at least 15. I still buy the latest edition of this book every time - always useful and well updated. It is packed with tips for first-timers and veterans alike. You spend a lot of money on a Disney vacation. Spend the money on this book to make sure you get the most out of your trip.

Robert B. Stepto is Professor of English, African American Studies, and American Studies at Yale University. About the Author

Artur Yusupov was ranked No. 3 in the world from 1986 to 1992, just behind the legendary Karpov and Kasparov. He has won everything there is to win in chess except for the World Championship. In recent years he has mainly worked as a chess trainer with players ranging from current World Champion Anand to local amateurs in Germany, where he resides.

Extremely High Quality Chess Instruction

This is the first in a series of nine books designed to help take you from about 1500 ELO (maybe 1500-1600 USCF roughly) to master strength. Key is that the material in these books is only a help. The areas covered in the series include tactics, positional play, strategy, calculating variations, openings and endgames. For example, some of the 24 chapters in this volume are on Discovered Attack, Centralization of the pieces, Pawn Endgames, The value of the pieces, Double Attack, Open files and Outposts, and Weak Points. Yusupov is very honest about things, and emphasizes that in addition to going through his material you must play in many tournaments, analyze your games thoroughly and read supplemental texts, including playing through well annotated master games. The ideal, however, is to have a chess coach, so this series is basically for those who for whatever reason don't or can't use a coach. Unlike another very prominent Russian GM chess author, there are no extravagant claims in this series of the 'Master x number of positions and you will be a strong tournament player' type. Yusupov is for the player who is willing to work hard at improving, and realizes that there are no short cuts to mastery of the game. The format of these books, as other reviewers have pointed out, is a hybrid of an instructional manual and a book of exercises. It is probably closer to the latter, as the instructional material is so concise. But when Yusupov does speak, it is worthwhile paying close attention, as you are getting very distilled and important chess wisdom. The format is very well done, with a brief instructional section with several examples. There follows then the test section, usually with 12 positions to analyze. Yusupov insists that you write down all your answers in detail and then play over every single variation on a board. No computer help is allowed. The choice of material has been guided by Yusupov's great chess knowledge and experience as a chess trainer and has been refined through student feedback, so I have to believe that the positions chosen to study are about as well chosen as you are going to find. Is the material 'dry', as famous American chess coach and author Jeremy Silman has stated? I would have to say yes, but dry does not mean boring, nor does it in anyway comment on the quality of the material, which is very high. If you are looking to fill in the holes in your own chess knowledge, even if you are rated higher than the intended audience, this series is a great place to do so.

Build, Boost, Evolve!

I ordered all three of the level 1 books: Build Up, Boost and Evolution, in their paperback version. They arrived today. The quality of the paper, the printing, the diagrams are all high quality, and the font size is excellent (for my old eyes).

Each book has twenty-four chapters, and each chapter contains approximately 10 to 15 diagrams. At the end of every chapter is a test containing 12 diagrammed positions. (You can see sample chapters and table of contents at www.qualitychess.co.uk).

The opening of each chapter has some explanatory text of a paragraph or two. It is without fluff, straight and to the point. For me this is a plus. I am not at the level of wanting only variations (Chess Informant style), but I also don't like excessive wordiness.

How to use this book? Yusupov has some ideas. Yusupov recommends spending one to two hours each chapter, and one to two hours on each test. At that rate you can go through one book in approximately twenty-five to fifty hours. Yusupov says that some might need more time. That's fine. There is no time limit. Yusupov recommends that each diagrammed position be setup on the chessboard and thoroughly investigated, say for ten minutes. (All these diagrammed positions run on the outside column of the page, so it is easy to cover up the text and variations which run on the inside.) Then the notes should be read and all the variations should be played through. As Yusupov says, "It is important to have a good understanding of the subject." After the chapter comes the chapter test. Each diagrammed position is to be setup and analyzed without moving the pieces. You must write down all your variations so that they can be compared with the answers. You should strive to get the main line and all the important sub variations. If you cannot solve it after ten minutes or so, then try again, but this time you may move the pieces. Oh, and by the way, "On absolutely no account may you get any help from the computer!"

If all this sounds like a lot of work, I agree. But I also play in chess tournaments, and I want better results. So, I'm willing to do the work. Yusupov however, explicitly says, "I must emphasize that just working with this book does not guarantee a rise in your rating." But then he says, "It simply give you a sold basis for a leap forward in chess ability," and that's good enough for me.

I'm rated 1650 USCF. The content of the first volume, "Build Up Your Chess" is already familiar. I haven't looked at every page yet, but I suspect that there will be very little that I have not seen or been exposed to at some level. However, I am glad to have this material for review, and to fill in any gaps that I may have. Also, it gives me the opportunity to apply what I know by following Yusupov's method of setting up the positions and working through variations.

I think many players as low as 1300 could use and benefit from this material, particularly if adults. (For children, say 14 or under, I'd recommend the Step 1,2,3 method, particularly the computer version.) These books would also be good for teachers who want to use it as the basis of lectures.

As far as the quality and content, I'm very pleased with these books.

I started this book as a 1500 rated player, and the chapter on "mate in 2 moves", is not what you think it is. Rather, it is a lesson on calculating many short variations (over wasting time on long ones) , and this has completely transformed my game, at all time controls. The rest of this book is also amazing, and if you are ready to become a real student of the game, this is a very pleasant way to go. The pages are very highlighter friendly as well!! Enjoy!

A play that changed the course of History

Throughout literary history, it has always been the most controversial or polemical works that stand out from the others, and take their place alongside other trailblazing novels. This being the case, it is certainly very clear why `A Taste Of Honey' has come to be regarded as one of the most important works of the 20th century. In its time a revolutionary play, this piece has managed to live up to its reputation, even over the many years since its was first published. The reason this famed play became so successful in the first place was precisely because it touched upon so many tender issues that had been strict taboos until it was written. First being published in 1959, `A Taste Of Honey' was released at a time when the world was just starting to get back to normal after the second world war. In an era of turmoil and uncertainty, the issues depicted in the play were precisely the ones that dominated lower class Britain, but, ironically, they were not the ones that were shown by the media, for they were considered to be too lowly to be worthy of depiction. Shelagh Delaney's piece, however, changed this quite drastically for all of a sudden the very issues which the upper class public was trying to avoid, were shoved into their faces. Right from the start of the play, the author makes it quite clear that this will be no ordinary play; touching on such a wide variety of issues ranging from poverty to abortion and prostitution, `A Taste Of Honey' shocked viewers around the world for, for the first time, a play was showing the true realities that ordinary people coexisted with. Although stunned at first, audiences soon started appreciating the play for they began to identify themselves with different characters in it, and therefore started to relate to it, which increased there liking of the piece, making it a success. In a world were the rich dominated, poverty was shown as an acceptable status; In a society were values were highly held, a prostitute was the main character; In a community where families meant everything, a mother abandoned her daughter to go live with her new husband; In an ambience were medicine was still an almost unexplored field, abortion was mentioned; And in a place where a classic, suburban family was considered the only reality which could exist, `A Taste of Honey' was written.

YOUNG GENIUS AT WORK

Delaney wrote this little masterpiece when she was only 18 years old, thus putting her among the ranks of Jane Auten and the like--though Delaney far surpases the young Austen in readability and emotional power.
Any fans of Morrissey and The Smiths will find this work extremely interesting, as Moz has said in many interviews that at least 50% of his songs come from this work. Reading it, one can see exactly why Morrissey took such a liking to this play, it being a parallel (in many ways) to his own childhood landscape. As soon as I finished the last line of this play, I sighed, closed the book, opened it to the first page, and read it all over again. To sum up the profundity of this work I will use a quote that Morrissey used regarding Marr's guitar compositions: "you will cry for hours and hours and swim in the tears."

just a wonderful anthology

This is a very comprehensive collection, worthwhile for students and teachers of classics, comparative literature, and modern poetry and for anyone interested in mythology and literature. One of the attractions of this book is the mixture of poems by modern English-language poets and poems translated from foreign languages. The editor has obviously searched far and wide for poems on Greek myth--poems from Romanian, Lithuanian, Chinese, Bengali, Hebrew, Danish, Hungarian, Polish, and Estonian are included in addition to the expected languages. The poems are well chosen and the translations are masterfully done. Another thing that makes this collection so comprehensive is the sheer
number of mythological characters covered. A great collection in every respect!

About the Author

Steven Bach has been associated with the motion pictures Sleuth, The Parallax View, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, and The French Lieutenant's Woman, in addition to Heaven's Gate. He also taught film at Columbia University. Bach passed away in March 2009.

Schadenfreude in spades

After seeing a reissued "director's cut" version of "Heaven's Gate," the movie so expensive to produce and so poorly received by the critics in 1980 that it destroyed Michael Cimino's reputation as a director and led to the demise of United Artists, I sought out this book by one of the United Artist producers involved in the project (and who also lost his job in the aftermath). It's a fascinating story. How could Ciminio--who had just come from making "The Deer Hunter," which netted him Academy Awards for best picture and best director--have created such a mess? Vastly exceeding its budget, "Heaven's Gate" was visually spectacular but had a poor sound track and a story that verged on incoherence at times. Why did United Artists let him do it? This book tells the story in great detail and Steven Bach was a fine writer. The most interesting parts, however--the Cimino story--gets lost from time to time in Bach's efforts to paint a comprehensive picture of United Artist's glorious history (it was founded by Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks) as well as describing the Hollywood system of movie making in general. I found myself skipping parts. But, that being said, it's a great read and a fabulous story of hubris and Hollywood finances.

When Art Meets Business!!

Must read for anyone interested in film making and the business of distribution. While art is important to some this still is a business that needs "product." Self indulgence too often results in a product that no one wants except the i individual who indulged himself. This is an inside baseball book that the late Mr. Bach wrote with honesty and passion.

A Steven King story come to life.

Not so much that it is horror (people aren't dying or being stalked by monsters), but in how the process of making the film started out wrong, and continues to get more and more wrong at every step. As a history, you know how it'll end, but it's still almost depressing how at each step the execs make wrong decision after wrong decision, throwing good money after bad. If Bach is to be believed, he and his confederates were so desperate for a defining hit that they simply talked themselves into a disaster, didn't have the guts or experience or self-preservation instinct to cut their losses and then the piper was paid.

Cimino comes across as someone who simply needed to be told no on occasion and forced to work within limits, and the early rejection of his Fountainhead idea shows that that was probably possible. But once the train started rolling, nothing save a miraculous Citizen Kane level result would have saved the day, and Heaven's Gate was no miracle. You could tell by the way they caved in to his demand to cast Huppert that the only real option had become ditching the project altogether, but that's not how ego works. Some say it's a masterpiece (though with the sound issues, absurd length and lack of narrative dynamism that's pretty hard to support), but it didn't need to be a masterpiece; it needed to be a hit. It wasn't and it destroyed Cimino's career and UA along with it. We are left to wonder whether a fictional account of a war that never happened was worth it.
