Poorly written by someone with NO clue about gender issues

I have to echo previous complaints about the atrocious grammatical and spelling errors throughout this book as well as the overall poor and directionless writing. Most appalling, however, is the complete lack of understanding Jones shows when it comes to transgendered people and the queer community in general.
I was at a gathering of trans activists remembering Brandon a year after his murder at which Jones got up and spoke. Her entire speech was a self-promoting, buy-my-book ploy peppered with "she" and "Teena" references, with no acknowledgement whatsoever that Brandon was transgendered. One prominent trans activist, Leslie Feinberg, left the stage as Jones continued on, returning later to denounce Jones's lack of awareness.
After being present for this, I knew Jones's book was going to be very poorly done, but since it's the only book so far about Brandon, I decided to buy a used copy - so as to not give any of my money to Jones - to learn the facts of the case. To be honest, many of the details are still unclear to me because of the muddled way in which the book was written. If you really just want the details and don't mind wading through the terrible writing to get to it, I suggest you get this book at a used bookstore, through Amazon's auctions or Zshops, or at a library rather than to further line the pockets of someone who just doesn't get it.

**Don't Judge A Book By its cover**

I bought this book in a book store and it looked very interesting. The back of the book had a very tantalizing introduction. It gave me the impression that this was a book about someone who gave up their entire identity to become a man; of someone who went into complete seclusion never to look back on their past. The book itself wasn't nearly as interesting as the introduction on the back cover. For many reasons. The author devoted many chapters on people surrounding the crime (their upbringing and other details.) I wish the focus would have been solely on Brandon Tina. Also, in the end I was hoping to hear about what happened to the 2 killers. But it didn't discuss their sentencing. There was also a lot written about transgender activism and hate crimes. That is all well and good but it also took away from the story. I often found the book rather boring mainly because the author really didn't make me feel like she was "in the know." It read more like a newspaper article than a book. "'...everything was too good to be true.' Yes, it certainly was." Very ironic last 2 sentences given the fact that I only bought the book based on its sensational cover and introduction.

Mediocre and Unskilled Writing

Aphrodite Jones relates Brandon's story in an extrordinarily trite and amateurish manner. This book sorely needs both copyediting and proofreading. Jones includes too many dull details of peripheral characters and events that do not propel the story forward. Also, there is an appalling number of spelling and grammatical errors. A reader should expect that the purchase price of a book includes the publisher having made the book readable and free of silly errors. The life and untimely death of Brandon Teena are fodder for a fascinating study of human nature. It's unfortunate that Jones did not exhibit any depth or insight whatsoever. This book is a huge disappointment on many levels.

Too many holes

I knew nothing about stop motion before I read this book so I did learn a lot but there is no way I could make a stop motion film yet. The book leaves too many holes. For example, while the book mentions dope sheets and story boards (and show small, difficult-to-read examples), it doesn't tell how to do them. The book also wastes a lot of time and space with extended quotes from people in the industry. For the most part, they are "funny day at the office" stories and not terribly helpful to a beginner. Overall, I think this book is trying to be everything to everybody so although many, many topics are touched upon, nothing is covered in enough detail. Also note that most everything is British, from prices of equipment to supplier and studio resources. So, if you're curious about the world of stop motion but don't care about doing it, this would be a good book. If you want to actually do stop motion, you'll need something better than this.

Love this book, terrific primer for beginners

Stop motion animation, by it's very nature is a multi skill endeavor. You need to know about timing, how bodies move, the effects of gravity, how to shoot video, how to take pictures, how to tell a story, and how to make movie sets and miniature figures! Wow, that seems like a lot and I hope I didn't scare you off.

My point is that stop motion entails a lot of different kinds of things --- And this book touches on all of these things. And it does it very nicely. You get a little bit of the history of stop motion and learn about some of the seminal works in the genre. And you get good information about how to make things move in a way that looks natural. And you get some good information about lighting, building sets and building figures.

This is simply an excellent introduction to actually doing stop motion animation. I used this book to make a short animation.

You can't go wrong and if you don't know much about how to do animation but want to learn this is a great place to start.
Highly recommended. It covers a lot of technical stuff in an easy to understand and not so technical way which is just terrific. Whether you are a amateur or aspiring professional you will benefit from this book.

Best book I've found as far as physically teaching the art, and not just history lessons. The book offers crucial lessons on subjects such as easing in and out, rig removal, and various other subjects. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to expand their knowledge in the field. Great for beginners and advanced animators alike.

The unique DAMA software, included as a free online resource, generates computer simulations that provide students with a new way to visualise the motion of mechanisms and vibrating systems. By varying the input and output parameters of the simulations themselves, students can clearly see and understand the effects of system changes.

• motion of particles and rigid bodies with and without reference to masses and forces (Kinematics and Kinetics) including motion of wheels, gears, linkages and mechanisms;

About the Author

It's an okay. Hope for a better edition.

Honestly, I don't like to review any book at their first edition because there are so many things they missed and/or need to improve.

The book covers most of the topics in both dynamics and vibration, you might find that they are well-divided within the book itself. The theoretical content was great; however, the sample and problem content were poor. If you didn't do well in the first course of dynamics, you might find yourself struggling with this book. I'd recommend you learn the dynamics part from Hibbeler's Mechanics of Materials, and then learn the vibration part from this book.

This book was used as 3000 level class for my undergraduate program. The fact that it is a soft-cover book makes it cheaper than any other engineering books with hard-cover. If you have to buy it for your class, then goodluck!; but, I'd not recommend this book if you are buying it for self-studying.

Book that covers the basics with little fanfare

So far as substance, it's a good book. It's mostly succinct and well written, but seems lacking compared to other books out there. The examples are good enough, but not top-notch, in my opinion. It wasn't outrageously expensive, which is always nice, but I wouldn't expect anything outstanding out of this book. In a nutshell, it gets the job done.

About the Author
John J. Shea is Professor of Anthropology at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He has conducted archaeological research at Stone Age sites in the Near East (Israel, Jordan, and Egypt) as well as in Eastern Africa (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania). Shea is also a professional flintknapper (one who makes replicas of stone tools) and he has demonstrated these and other skills involving Stone Age technologies in numerous television documentaries. He is the co-author and co-editor of several books, most recently Out of Africa 1: The First Hominin Colonization of Eurasia (2010). His papers have been published in American Scientist, Current Anthropology, the Journal of Human Evolution, Evolutionary Anthropology, Paléorient, and the Journal of the Israel Prehistoric Society.

This textbook is really just a bunch of articles bound up as a textbook, with a couple introductions. (Which are one of the best parts.) So don't expect it to be some kind of 101 book for the subject. Keep in mind that this book is a compilation of essays from many different well-known experts on the subject, some of which aren't too neutral in their opinions. Also, some of these opinions might be a bit dated. Even though it is intended as a textbook for people who have been studying the subject, it's interesting enough, and readable enough that you can pick it up without any previous knowledge and still enjoy it.
