Must in Religious Studies
By C. Lasher
There are two books that you must read in order to understand the modern study of religions: The Sacred and the Profane by Mircea Eliade and The Meaning and End of Religion by Wilfred Cantwell Smith. It is not that the theories that these two books espouse are universally accepted amongst the scholarly community. In fact, both draw heavy criticism. However, both are extraordinarily influential on the study itself. They represent the two major schools of thought in the early 20th century: The Chicago style (Eliade) and the Harvard style (Smith).

More specifically, Smith offers a shocking view of studying religion and what religion is in the first place. Whether or not you completely agree with it, Smith will give you quite a bit to think about.

Dated, but essential reading for those interested in the problem of definition
By John in Orlando
This classic work is a study of the evolution of "religion" as a reified, essentialist concept in modern intellectual history. Religion, as Cantwell Smith persuasively argues, is--when understood either as designating an absolute "thing" in human experience ("religion in general") or as indicating a particular instantiation of that thing ("the Christian religion" or "the Buddhist religion")--purely a modern intellectualist construct, one that has no parallel in pre-modern Western thought or in the ideas of non-Western cultures that have not come under decisive Western influence. Cantwell Smith further argues that the term "religion" and the concept that it communicates create barriers to true scholarly understanding of human religiousness.

The methodology proposed by Cantwell Smith involves recognizing what we have called "religions" as being, in fact, nexuses of "cumulative traditions" (the historically-observable data of religious life in history--artworks, buildings, rituals, communities) and "faith" (the inner encounter between the individual and what Cantwell Smith calls "transcendence"--presumably comparable to Otto's Heilige or Eliade's "the sacred," and similarly susceptible to the charge that it is simply a smuggled-in God-concept).

The Meaning and End of Religion is now nearly half a century old, and it shows its age. While the historical survey is very compelling, and the case Cantwell Smith makes in this portion of the book is persuasive, much of the rest of the work takes a decisively theological turn that reveals the author's largely uncritical mid-twentieth-century liberal-Protestant worldview. When Cantwell Smith writes that "Men of different religious communities are going to have to collaborate to construct jointly and deliberately the kind of world of which men of different religious communities can jointly approve, as well as one in which they can jointly participate" (location 2421 in the Kindle edition), it's hard for this not to sound like the culturally-imperialist fantasy of white, affluent, first-world liberals like the author.

In spite of these reservations, The Meaning and End of Religion is a work of real erudition and one which has helped to establish important themes in the methodological and theoretical study of religion over the past five decades.

A classic of Spiritual Thought.
By Don Burger
It is not surprising that this book, THE MEANING AND END of RELIGION, has become an authoratative source for students and scholars in their study of religion and spiritual matters.

Because of the limited, restricted and narrowing thought that is imposed upon us by embracing our own religion, whether it is Christian, Hindu, Baptist, Lutheran, or any other sect the author suggests that we discontinue using the term "religion" itself, and replace it with a Universal conception of God that embraces all of humanity, not of just one separate religious sect. The author questions why the loving father of all humankind favors only the Christians, the Methodists, the Baptists, the Jews, or any others, as his "chosen few".

The importance of learning about the History of other religions, as well as our own, is strongly recommended by the author. The chapter "The Special Case of Islam" opened my eyes to my own narrow, prejudiced conception of "those other guys".

The chapter on "Faith" is thoughtful enough to have been written in a book by itself.

"THE MEANING AND THE END OF RELIGION" is a classic in the area of spiritual thought. It will undoubtedly remain a classic for many years to come.

Our One Great Act of Fidelity: Waiting for Christ in the Eucharist, by Ronald Rolheiser

From the author of the bestselling, The Holy Longing, comes a book about the central expression of faith for hundreds of millions of Christians, the Eucharist.

More so than anything else, the Eucharist is what anchors many peoples' life, prayer, and ultimately the way they live their lives. In this deeply personal book, Father Ronald Rolheiser delves into the history and meaning of this sacred tradition, drawing upon the insights of various scripture scholars, theologians, and church teachings. With personal warmth and great insight, he reflects on his own particular Roman Catholic upbringing and the centrality that the Eucharist has within that tradition. At the same time, he looks at other denominations’ traditions around the Eucharist. Our One Great Act of Fidelity is an investigation into the ways people secure their faith and belief and discover true intimacy with God and each other. Ultimately, however, it is a spiritual and a personal statement of how Ronald Rolheiser understands the Eucharist and why he celebrates it every day.

chapter 1

The INCARNATION and

the BODY of CHRIST

A story that is familiar to many of us tells of a young girl who woke up one night frightened and disoriented, convinced that there were spooks and monsters around her in the darkness of her room. She ran to her parents' bedroom for safety. Her mother brought her back to her own room, put on a light to show her that there was nothing there, and gently tried to reassure her that she was safe. Then, just before leaving, the mother said to her, "You don't need to be afraid. You aren't alone. God is here in the room with you." The child replied, "I know that God is here with me, but I need someone here who has some skin!"

We are all like that little girl. As human beings we are sensual creatures in the true meaning of that term. We are creatures of the senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste. Everything that enters us goes through one of those five senses and everything that comes out of us, all communication and expression, comes out through one of those same senses. We are not angels, pure spirits without bodies. We are incarnate spirits, souls that have a body, and so we need things that we can touch, see, hear, taste, and smell.

That is true, too, sometimes especially so, in terms of our relationship to God. A God who is everywhere is, for us, at a certain point, nowhere. We are human. We need a God who has some skin, who can be located, who can somehow be physically touched. And God--who knows human nature, since he created it--respects that need in us and meets us on our own terms. Thus, the central tenet within Christianity, the very thing that defines it, is the belief that, in Christ, God took on concrete flesh and became tangible, physical, someone who can touch and be touched. Indeed the very word Christ ultimately means divine reality inside of human flesh.

When John wrote his Gospel, he did not include a Christmas story. In place of the birth of Jesus, he simply wrote, The word was made flesh and it lives among us. That single statement defines Christianity. Christianity isn't first and foremost a religion or a set of beliefs. Rather, parallel to the unfolding of the universe itself, it is an ongoing story, the story of God taking on physical flesh in this world, a story that began with the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and that continues down to this very day. God is still taking on concrete flesh. How?

The mystery of God taking on concrete flesh, which Christians call the incarnation, isn't a simple thirty--three--year incursion of God into human history in the person of Jesus. It's more. God took on flesh in Jesus, but the incarnation didn't end when Jesus ascended back to the Father after his resurrection. The incarnation is still going on. God is still taking on concrete flesh in this world. Where?

In the Christian scriptures, the term the body of Christ is used to refer equally to three things: the historical body of Jesus, the body of believers, and the Eucharist. Each of these is referred to as the body of Christ. Each is the body of Christ. For instance, when Saint Paul refers to either the community of believers or the Eucharist, he never intimates that they are like Jesus, that they replace Jesus, that they are symbolic representations of Jesus, or even that they are a mystical presence of Jesus. Each is equally called the body of Christ, each is that place in our world where God takes on concrete flesh. God still has skin in this world, in the Eucharist and in the community of believers. The incarnation is still going on. The word is still becoming flesh and living among us.

That is the first, and the key, thing that must be said about the Eucharist. Along with the community of believers, the Eucharist is God's physical presence, God's real presence in the world. The Eucharist is the place where God continues to take concrete physical flesh just as he once did in the womb of Mary. In the Eucharist, the word continues to become flesh.

2

The CENTRALITY of the EUCHARIST

to the CHRISTIAN FAITH

Jesus didn't leave us a lot of rituals. He left us his Word1 and he left us one ritual, the Eucharist. He refers to other rituals such as baptism, and other parts of the Christian scriptures refer to the laying on of hands, to the confessing of sins, and to various kinds of anointing with oil, but Jesus, himself, left us only his Word and the Eucharist.

And it is around these two things, the Word and the Eucharist, that we form community; from these we create church. Historically Roman Catholics and Protestants have differed as to which of these to give the priority. In classical Protestant theology and practice, the Word is central; it is what first and foremost draws us into community. Eucharist might or might not follow. In Roman Catholicism, the Eucharist is given priority and the Word and all the other sacraments are ultimately in support of the Eucharist.2 In a vast oversimplification, it might be said that Roman Catholics form church around the Eucharist, while seeing the Word as a necessary prelude to and supplement to the Eucharist; whereas Protestants form church around the Word, while seeing the Eucharist as flowing out from that in different ways.

Partly this can be seen simply by walking into either a Roman Catholic or a Protestant church. When you walk into

a Protestant church, what is front and center? A pulpit or a lectern, something from which the Word of God is proclaimed and preached. Secondarily there might or might not be an altar, and if there is one, it is generally less centrally situated. The architecture speaks the theology: we gather first and foremost around the Word. The Eucharist takes a secondary place. When you walk into a Roman Catholic church the reverse is true: What is front and center? An altar. Off to one side, far less prominently, is placed a pulpit or a lectern. The message is also clear in the architecture: we gather first and foremost around the Eucharist, and the Word takes second place.

Biblical scholars suggest that this kind of division may have existed already at the time when the Gospels were written. Already then there were major variations among the different communities as to how often the Eucharist was celebrated and what its exact role was in bringing the community together. In either case, however, it was still deemed to be central, the summit to which we are called. Augustine, perhaps the most influential Christian theologian of all time, puts it this way: Jesus didn't leave us the church and from the church we derive the Eucharist; rather, for him, Jesus left us the Eucharist and from the Eucharist we derive the church. The church is in service of the Eucharist, not vice versa. Heaven will be a banquet table. The Eucharist already is that table. Because of this, Roman Catholics teach that the Eucharist is the source and the summit of all Christian life. However, because it is both source and summit, it gives a mixed message: it is both the sign of our unity and a means of coming to that unity. It is both the end to which all Christians are journeying and, at least partially, the means to get there. This double meaning has been the source of much, and sometimes bitter, debate among the churches in regard to the practice of intercommunion.

3

The RADICAL, SHOCKING, RAW, PHYSICAL CHARACTER

of the EUCHARIST

A few years ago Brenda Peterson wrote a book of essays titled Nature and Other Mothers.3 Her first entry is wonderfully named In Praise of Skin. In it, she tells how at one point in her life she was afflicted by painful skin rashes. Like the woman with the hemorrhage in the Gospels, she tried every possible doctor, but found no cure. Medication after medication proved ineffective, and eventually the doctors ran out of things to try. The rash always came back.

One day her grandmother assessed her and pronounced a more ancient and accurate diagnosis: "Skin needs to be touched!" Her grandmother then began to give her regular skin massages, and these did what the more sophisticated medicines couldn't do. They cured her.

Peterson's grandmother is right: Skin needs to be touched!

God knows that better than anyone. It's why Jesus gave us the Eucharist. In the Eucharist skin gets touched. The Eucharist isn't abstract, a theological instruction, a creed, a moral precept, a philosophy, or even just an intimate word. It's bodily, an embrace, a kiss, something shockingly physical, the real presence in a deeper way than even the old metaphysics imagined.

For whatever reasons, we tend to shy away from admitting how radically physical the Eucharist actually is. Saint Paul didn't share that fear. For him, the physical communion that takes place in the Eucharist, between us and Christ as well as among ourselves, is as real and radical as sexual union. For example, he argues against sex outside of marriage by saying that our union with Christ and each other in the Body of Christ is so intimate and real that, in effect, we would prostitute that Body if we were to have illicit sex. Strong words, but they are predicated on a very earthy conception of the Eucharist.

The early church followed Paul on this. They understood the Eucharist as so real, so physical, and so intimate that they surrounded it with the same taboos of privacy, reverence, and reticence that we reserve for sexual intimacy. For some centuries the early church had a practice (still partially followed in

some present--day church programs) that it called the Disci-plina Arcani. The discipline tried to guarantee that nobody who was not baptized or fully initiated into the community could participate in the Eucharist (beyond the liturgy of the Word). As well, Christians who were fully initiated were forbidden to speak to outsiders about the Eucharist. The intent of the discipline was not to create a mystique around the Eucharist so as to draw people to it through curiosity. Rather the idea was that the Eucharist is so intimate an act that propriety, respect, and reverence demand non--exhibitionism: you don't make love in public, and you don't talk to outsiders about this kind of intimacy.

We tend to shy away from that kind of talk. Partly that's understandable. It's hard to be comfortable religiously with how Christianity understands the physical and the bodily.

Christianity is without doubt the earthiest of all religions.4 Unlike most other religions, it doesn't call you out of the physical, out of the body, or out of the world. Rather it tells you that God enters the physical, becomes one with it, blesses it, redeems it, and that there is no reason to escape from it.

Something in that goes against the grain. Christ's relationship to the physical scandalized his contemporaries. "This is intolerable language!" is what the crowds said when Jesus spoke of the physical character of the Eucharist in John's Gospel, and the raw physical character of the Eucharist is still hard for us to accept today. But it's also a wonderful part of Christianity. In the Eucharist, our skin gets touched.

And, given our tensions and loneliness, we need that touch frequently, daily even. The late essayist and novelist Andre Dubus once wrote a wonderful little apologia on why he went to Eucharist regularly, despite the eyebrows that were sometimes raised in the circles he moved in. Here are his words:

This morning I received the sacrament I still believe in: at seven-- fifteen the priest elevated the host, then the chalice, and spoke the words of the ritual, and the bread became flesh, the wine became blood, and minutes later I placed on my tongue the taste of forgiveness and of love that affirmed, perhaps celebrated, my being alive, my being mortal. This has nothing to do with immortality, with eternity; I love the earth too much to contemplate a life apart from it, although I believe in that life. No, this has to do with mortality and the touch of flesh, and my belief in the sacrament of the Eucharist is simple: without touch, God is a monologue, an idea, a philosophy; he must touch and be touched, the tongue on flesh, and that touch is the result of the monologues, the idea, the philosophies which led to faith; but in the instant of the touch there is no place for thinking, for talking, the silent touch affirms all that, and goes deeper: it affirms the mysteries of love and mortality.5

The Eucharist is physical, real, shockingly so.

part two

The MANY DIMENSIONS

of the EUCHARIST

Christians argue a lot about the Eucharist. What does it mean? What should it be called? How often should it be celebrated? Who should be allowed to participate fully?

There are lots of views on the Eucharist. For some it is a meal, for others it is a sacrifice. For some it is a ritual act, sacred and set apart, for others it is a community gathering, the more mess and kids the better. For some it is a deep personal prayer, for others it is a communal worship for the world. For some its very essence is a coming together, a communion, of those united in a single denominational faith, while for others part of its essence is its reaching out, given that it contains an innate imperative to wash the feet of those who are different from ourselves. For some it is a celebration of sorrow, a making present of Christ's suffering, the place where we can break down, for others it is the place to celebrate joy and sing alleluia. For some it is a ritual remembrance, a bringing into the present of the historical events of Jesus' dying, rising, ascending, and sending the Holy Spirit, for others it is a celebration of God's presence with us today. For some it is a celebration of the Last Supper, something to be done less frequently, for others it is God's daily feeding of his people with a new manna, Christ's body, and is something to be done every day. For some it is a celebration of reconciliation, a ritual that forgives and unites, for others unity and reconciliation are preconditions for its proper celebration. For some it is a vigil act, a gathering that is essentially about waiting for something else or someone else to appear, for others it is a celebration of something that is already present and is asking to be received and recognized. For some it is understood to make present the real, physical body of Christ, for others it is understood to make Christ present in a real but spiritual way. Some call it the Lord's Supper, some call it the Eucharist, some call it the Mass. Some celebrate it once a year, some celebrate it four times a year, some celebrate it every Sunday, and some celebrate it every day. Who's right?

biblical based book on eucharist
By james
i am a priest and i find this book to be a biblically based and practical explanation of our greatest act of worship the Eucharist, the meal of Thanksgiving and Remebrance. The book touches the heart of the faithful and shows how Jesus is the Word who communicates to us as we are, phyical with five senses and spiritual with a longing to be fed. i find the book presenting Jesus, the Real Presence, as a Gift, a Person, Someone to be received into my heart and not a 'thing' to be anaylized and fragmented with philosophical thought. a must read for as many as possible. last, thankfully, John 6, a most fascinating chapter in all of the bible was used and emphasized Jesus as the Bread of Life and we can freely choose to receive this Gift, or walk away. we do the latter at a great loss to our soul. "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." He is the Word of Eternal Life.

Reassessing our ritual
By LeonCarapetyan
Although written from a distinctly Roman Catholic approach to the rites and rituals of church participation and attendance, this book also provides a universal insight to the reasons for communion and for participating in a Eucharistic worship service. Well written and easily understood, it makes good reading for any passionate Christian at any time, but especially in the season of Lent.

Places No One Knows, by Brenna Yovanoff

A good girl dreams herself into a bad boy's room in this lyrically romantic novel by a bestselling author from which Maggie Stiefvater, author of The Raven King, says she "woke up satisfied."

Waverly Camdenmar spends her nights running until she can’t even think. Then the sun comes up, life goes on, and Waverly goes back to her perfectly hateful best friend, her perfectly dull classes, and the tiny, nagging suspicion that there’s more to life than student council and GPAs.
Marshall Holt is a loser. He drinks on school nights and gets stoned in the park. He is at risk of not graduating, he does not care, he is no one. He is not even close to being in Waverly’s world.
But then one night Waverly falls asleep and dreams herself into Marshall’s bedroom—and when the sun comes up, nothing in her life can ever be the same. In Waverly’s dreams, the rules have changed. But in her days, she’ll have to decide if it’s worth losing everything for a boy who barely exists.

From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-Waverly Camdenmar appears to be a model student with a competitive streak, but she has her secrets. Marshall Holt seems tuned out (he begins or ends many days with mood-altering substances), but he has smarts he doesn't play up. These two seeming opposites find a mutual attraction, brought to the forefront when Waverly meditates to a magic candle and is transported to Marshall's bedroom. Yovanoff paints a bleak portrait of high school, with a ruthless social structure, scheming "best friends," beer at every party, and mostly clueless adults. Waverly and Marshall switch off as narrators every few chapters, as they struggle to fit their unlikely but visceral attraction into their daytime lives. The author has some great descriptive phrases and images, such as girls with "too much eyeliner, not enough shirt"; painting fingernails with Wite-Out in a boring class; and a "soft, wobbly place" where awake and asleep come together. The school prom (which Waverly is helping plan and Marshall doesn't expect to attend) gives a focus for the final chapters. This is an angst-filled story with older high school characters, where everyone seems some degree of miserable. There are pockets of honesty that bode well for the future. VERDICT Suitable for collections in need of dark fiction with a hint of magic.-Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley Sch., Fort Worth, TXα(c) Copyright 2011. The elegant prose carries readers beyond the confines of reality
By Teen Reads
When you're the protagonist character of a YA novel, you usually have a shameful past or a bleak social life --- maybe even a massive scar slashed across your face. After all, a flawless main character evokes more eye rolls than admiration. So when Waverly Camdenmar declares herself "so virtuous it makes you want to die" in the novel's first chapter, you know PLACES NO ONE KNOWS doesn't shy away from YA taboos.

Instead, Brenna Yovanoff plunges into the underbelly (or should I say under-flat stomach?) of the infamous Mary Sue. Junior Waverly's GPA is a 4.0, her body is a 10, and she spends her nights running until her feet bleed. And though Waverly might reign over her high school as the queen bee's second-in-command, "Miss Perfect" strategizes every word, fakes every emotion and forgets to smile unless she's reminded.

So when Waverly falls asleep --- finally! --- only to wake up in loser Marshall Holt's bedroom, the girl of endless knowledge...she doesn't know how to react. Not at all. But even as Waverly and Marshall forge a heart-wrenching romance in the dead of night, "Miss Perfect" doesn't dare befriend a slacker, stoner and all-around loser in the hallways' fluorescence. So when a startling (but not exactly shocking) betrayal forces Waverly to choose between her heart and her façade, navigating this social dilemma will take more than a killer strategy and a phony grin. For the first time in all her years of high school, this self-proclaimed robot will actually need to feel something.

Waverly might fake all her smiles, but I guarantee PLACES NO ONE KNOWS will coax a genuine smile --- and frown and wince and laugh and grimace --- out of readers, no overarching strategy for social dominance needed. From Waverly's piercing narration to Marshall's heart of gold (and coughs of a smoker's lungs), Yovanoff stuffs her novel full of beauty, tragedy and gritty high school reality. PLACES NO ONE KNOWS isn't just a novel; it's an exposé, tearing past the glamour and thrusting the cruelty and brokenness of high school's social stratosphere into the daylight.

But when your protagonist thinks of herself as an android, she can only seem so human. While Marshall's deeply, almost dangerously, human, his narration stumbles into self-pity. Waverly's fierce intelligence doesn't just impress readers, it daunts them; after all, when Waverly proclaims her knowledge of immolation --- whatever that is --- on page three, you know you're in for an intellectual challenge.

But if you're in the market for six hours of intellectual challenge, PLACES NO ONE KNOWS sure beats the SATs. Yovanoff's love of figurative language plunges readers into the surreal; Waverly's narration might seem painfully real, but the novel's stark, elegant prose carries readers beyond the confines of reality. Think the lovechild of Salvador Dali and Regina George.

So if you spent MEAN GIRLS longing for a few more floppy clocks, congratulations --- consider your wish officially (and beautifully and triumphantly) granted.

Here, guided by Jim Wilson's researches into Scottish genetic history, he (Alistair Moffat) tackles on the of the biggest stories possible: linking up the story of the earliest Scots to the earliest men... He is wonderfully able to communicate the epic elements of the story - which matters because that's precisely what man's survival has been' - David Robinson, The Scotsman 'I've been enjoyably immersed in it since it arrived on my doorstep last week...wonderfully readable. This is no dry, academic account, but it's the most fascinating and thought-provoking treatment of interlocking aspects of our early history I've yet to read. I recommend it whole-heartedly' - Colin Will, poet and publisher 'Alistair Moffat explores the history of where we all came from, with the help of new DNA science' - BBC Radio Scotland 'In The Scots: A Genetic Journey, historian and broadcaster Alistair Moffat taps into the latest advances in DNA science to find that our origins lie not only deep in the mists of time, but right off the map... with the help of historical geneticist Jim Wilson, he finds that, post-Ice Age, Scotland's earliest settlers walked here from what is now Spain' - Jim Gilchrist, Scotsman 'In The Scots: A Genetic Journey, Alistair Moffat and James F. Britain as a whole is a mongrel nation' - Julian Baggini 'Skillfully written, weaving together genetics, archaeology, history, and topics of interest like red hair ' - James Honeychuck on Amazon History has always mattered to Scots, and rarely more so than now at the outset of a new century, with a new census appearing in 2011 and after more than ten years of a new parliament. An almost limitless archive of our history lies hidden inside our bodies and we carry the ancient story of Scotland around with us. The mushrooming of genetic studies, of DNA analysis, is rewriting our history in spectacular fashion. In The Scots: A Genetic Journey, Alistair Moffat explores the history that is printed on our genes, and in a remarkable new approach, uncovers the detail of where we are from, who we are and in so doing colour vividly a DNA map of Scotland.

Excellent overview of several thousand years of Scottish history
By David Wilson
I have read books dedicated to the history of Scotland that were less informative than this one, which does not even profess to be a standard history. Instead it focuses on the genetic roots of the Scots. But you could leave out the DNA discussions and still have a first-rate overview of the land and its peoples' interactions with populations in England, Ireland and Scandinavia.

I think the jury must remain out on a few of the genetic associations and assertions made by the authors. Scotland is a place with a complex genetic history. It is not difficult to discern different markers in the DNA of the Scots that point to different eras of immigration, shifts in power, and decline of particular components of the population. I am not convinced that the authors have properly associated one distinct genetic profile with the ancient Picts, though of course they may be right. Similarly, their treatment of a marker found extensively in Northern Ireland and Lowland Scotland seems to combine different clans and families in a way not supported by traditional genealogy and records.

Even if the authors overreach in some of their analysis, this book is rich in food for thought. Several books have been written in recent years about the peopling of the British Isles, many of them using DNA analysis of modern populations as a tool. I consider this one the best I have encountered so far.

(I have followed the use of DNA analysis for both genealogical and anthropological analysis for about a decade. About 4-5 years ago I used the laboratory services of co-author Wilson -- no relation, as confirmed by DNA! -- to establish several marker values from a DNA sample I provided. I am not a molecular biologist, but I consider myself an educated layman.)

An excellent journey through time....
By James
I bought the book because both my husband and myself have Scottish ancestry, and I was curious about what the authors had to say. If you are looking for a book that has an extensive list of genealogical data, this is not it, although it has some. It is a sweeping story of the history of a region of the earth, and how that history is reflected in the bloodlines of the people living there today. It is surprisingly interesting, easy to digest, and you can learn a lot, quite painlessly. I highly recommend this.

The origins of the Scots
By Iain Esslemont
This is a relatively recent history of Scots origins and so is most up-to-date and very complete, as far as is known. A reason is given for the 'disappearance' of the Picts. The history of Scotland in the first millennium AD is extremely complicated and it takes more than one reading to digest it all. The format, part history and part narrative, is a good balance. It is a very full and authoritative book and well worth reading, and useful as a reference.

More theory than practice!
By A Customer
As a commercial GPS user, I was looking for a book that would offer a fairly basic overview of GPS, but that would still go into significant detail. This book does exactly that, but it also covers a lot of the mathematical theory behind GPS. This book certainly isn't introductory and I think would be more suited to a surveyor with a good knowledge of surveying techniques who was interested in GPS. The mathematics gets a bit heavy for a non-mathematician but Chapter 7 (Surveying with GPS) is an excellent introduction/review of the practical uses of GPS in the field. A good intermediate-advanced level book, probably very suited to students.

A resource for more than just GPS
By A Customer
This is an excellent book for anyone that works with spacecraft geometry and/or timekeeping. It contains concise descriptions of coordinate systems, orbital elements and timekeeping. I've been using it as an algorithm 'cookbook'. This is not a book for a casual GPS user, or someone who is sqeamish about math. It's much easier to use than the Astronomical Almanac for basic algorithms. Like a fool, I lent it out. Now I need to buy another one.

Review
"I read Desires in Conflict for the first time when I was 19. I was fighting my own personal battle with homosexuality, sure that freedom wasn't possible and afraid that God and the Church hated me. More than a decade later, I am free of desires that once held me captive, strong in my faith, married to my amazing wife, Leslie, and currently the Executive Director of Exodus International, North America. The Lord used Desires in Conflict to shine a light into the darkness and to help guide me out of homosexuality. Joe Dallas has eternally impacted a generation of young people like me."

Nice book. I think the author should have left more room to different perspectives on the topic.

The honest truth on a difficult issue.
By V
A few of the reviews for this book are very negative and very biased. As a counselor looking for the truth to share with those who would like "a way out" of the homosexual lifestyle, this is a very helpful book. If you don't want to know God's views on the issue and you feel that homosexuality is an OK option, don't read this book. If you feel like there must be something more to life than living the homosexual lifestyle and you want to experience God's love and acceptance, this is the book for you.

Desires in Conflict: I highly recommend the book
By Earl Wallace
"Desires in Conflict..." by Joe Dallas, is a manual for Christian men striving to be Godly while dealing with their homosexual temptations. The book deals with the topic honestly and sympathetically but remains grounded in scripture. I highly recommend the book to any man struggling with homosexuality, and to any minister who may be counseling such men.

Not like most vocal scores
By Jay
Most Piano/Vocal scores from Broadway and/or Hollywood include guitar chords in addition to the piano and vocal lines. Most of the songs within this songbook do NOT have the guitar chords published. For piano 'fakers', the chord designations are a must. This is a serious deficiency in this songbook.

On the positive side, all the great music and songs expected were present, and as far as I can tell, with the original piano arrangements.

Be Careful -- Make Sure This Is What You Want
By T. L. Bantle
I agree with the reviewer that these are the original piano arrangements. But what that means is that for some selections, the arrangement does not include the melody so unless someone is singing you don't "get" the song you might think you would in the piano part.

The following selections include melody: Anyone Can Whistle, Being Alive, Comedy Tonight, Every Day a Little Death, I Never Do Anything Twice, I Remember, Johanna, The Ladies Who Lunch, The Little Things You Do Together, Losing My Mind, Not While I'm Around, One More Kiss, A Parade in Town, Pretty Women, Send in the Clowns, Sorry Grateful, You Must Meet My Wife (but it's missing part of the song).

These selections are purely accompaniment: Another Hundred People, The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, By the Sea, Could I Leave You? Green Finch and Linnet Bird, Pretty Lady, Remember?

The rest are a hybrid, some melody, some accompaniment: Broadway Baby, I'm Still Here, The Miller's Son.

They're all beautiful arrangements -- just as long as you know what you are and are not getting.

Sondheim's Masterpieces
By Katie
As a fanatical Sondheim lover and singer, this book was awonderful addition to my collection. Among some of his best earlytitles, this book includes songs like "I Remember", "Losing My Mind", and "Another Hundred People". These are wonderfully written pieces which deserve many books like this one. They are a joy to listen to and even more to play, and I hope everyone will enjoy this book as much as I do.
