About the Author
Ellen Braaten, PhD, is Director of the Learning and Emotional Assessment Program (LEAP) at Massachusetts General Hospital and Assistant Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. The coauthor of Straight Talk about Psychological Testing for Kids, Dr. Braaten lives with her family in Boston.

Brian Willoughby, PhD, is a Staff Psychologist at LEAP and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Willoughby specializes in neuropsychological assessments of children and adolescents with learning, developmental, and emotional concerns. He is married and lives in Boston.

One of the best resources for slow processing speed, with or without ADHD/LD

As a psychologist and mother of a child with slow processing speed, this book is one of the best resources I've come across. It gives clear information and suggestions about how to cope with slow processing speed in the home, at school, among friends, and for the child emotionally. We used it as a platform to educate ourselves, our child, and the school. I would highly recommend this book for both parens and clinicians who would like to understand or help someone diagnosed with slow processing speed better, whether that is in combination with another diagnosis such as ADHD or a Learning Disability, or not.

Every day I sit in front of my computer. I'm surrounded by technology in every room of the house. I started to read Ted Andrew's Animal-Speak, but then stopped. I went outside and listened to the birds and insects and animals as I continued reading. I realized that, indeed, when we isolate ourselves from nature we are actually separating ourselves from reality.
So this is truly a book that changed me. I try to get outside every pleasant day. And when I do, I think of what I learned in this book. I'm more attuned to the animals and they seem to share their secrets with me. Secrets of peaceful living and secrets of self-empowerment. Secrets of spirituality and secrets of magic!
And the great thing is that with the guidance in this book I'm never limited. As you'll discover, there is animal after animal in this book that you can learn about and to which you can attune. Perhaps a lizard one day and a cat the next. Or perhaps you might find the power of the loon (who helps with lucid dreaming) to be just what you need.
One exercise I've found very useful is the technique used to call your spirit animal. You mediate on the animal and do simple visualizations, imagining it standing before you or drawing close to you. Eventually, you visualize it merging into you, feeling its energies as strong and vital. After spending just five minutes like this you will be more awake, aware and alert. Amazing!

About the Author

Ted Andrews (1952-2009) was an award-winning author and deeply respected teacher in the metaphysical and spiritual fields. Through his seminars, symposiums, workshops, and lectures, he was committed to making esoteric material comprehensible and practical for everyone.

Ted Andrew's many gifts included clairvoyancy, aura interpretation, past-life analysis, dreams interpretation, numerology, and Tarot. He wrote many books on these subjects, but is best known for his work with animal mysticism and for his bestselling Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small. Certified in basic hypnosis and acupressure, Andrews was also involved in the study and use of herbs as an alternative path in health care, focusing strongly on esoteric forms of healing with sound, music, and voice. In addition to his interest in metaphysics, Ted was a trained pianist and often used the Celtic harp, bamboo flute, shaman rattles, Tibetan bells, Tibetan Singing Bowl, and quartz crystal bowls to create individual healing therapies and induce higher states of consciousness.

GREAT SERVICE! Great copy! Happy to GET THIS BOOK!

Ted Andrews inspects areas of thought I think about often. this is a book for some people, but maybe not everyone. If you ever have a notion, or feel a message coming from the way animals are, you may glean something from this book. Otherwise, if you are strictly hardcore concrete and geek, you may not find this appealing. It has it's own flavor.

I like to collect books by this author, Ted Andrews. Certainly I do not agree with everything that everyone says, but I feel he has some interesting perspectives and experience in thought I have contemplated upon.

If you can find this in the library, you will understand that it is of interest to the main stream. Consider that. It may or may not find a place at your own public library. We are each different and individual. I believe that Ted Andrews has something to say, but I don't necessarily wish to collect his entire set of publications, though I want to get a copy of his "Nature Speaks" book and cards. I'll go from there to see where it leans next.

Synchronicity and helpful insights from the animal world.

For several decades this has been my favorite reference book when I have seen or been visited by certain animals or birds. (Like two huge black turkey vultures perched by on my deck railing and then on my chimney!) It is well organized and gives good metaphysical and spiritual explanations for each contact with the animal world. The "messages" from the animals are derived from Native American lore. Some are quite detailed and really "hit home" with one's current life situation. The synchronicity is fun and validating.

I recently ordered a new copy because my original disappeared (probably loaned to someone) and I found that it is one book this animal lover cannot live without. I believe this was the classic original book about messages conveyed by animals, and while there are more recent such publications by other authors, I find this is by far the most detailed and comprehensive.

This is a must reference, especially for awakened folks living in rural areas, or even suburbs....critters are great messengers and can be very enlightening.

The pictures are quite small and aren't labled on the picture

This book is VERY informative, but it makes it harder to study when the pictures are labeled with numbers and you have to then match the numbers with a key. Overall, still a useful study tool and a convenient layout.

I like this book

It's a good size with good information. Doesn't really help you chart the course of peripheral nerves too much, but it's done a nice job for me so far on brainstem anatomy. I also like how the ear and eye have their own chapters, so its pretty easy to flip right to the section you need. The numbering identification system takes a little getting used to, but it works. I haven't found any errors yet, but I don't use it that much, mostly as a supplement resource to help visualize things I can't find in Netters Atlas or a new edition of Grays Anatomy. I don't regret this purchase.

Not as "easy" as the title suggests. That said...

Easy Piano... well, okay, if you're comparing it to Chopin? Yes, child's play.

Down to the serious. I am a musician. I am also a teacher of music. I also lead worship, and have done this for about 15 years now.

As for this book. The arrangements are okay. But are not for anyone who has had less than a year of lessons, and maybe up to two years, depending on how serious you are and how much you practice and learn in that two years. But if you are studious, a year will still be the entry level on average to be able to play any of these tunes at tempo after a week of practice.

Now, as to the content. "Top 50"... well, some yes, some not. However, the song selection is subjective to the people who compiled this volume. So while I would not have included at least fifteen of the songs contained here, that is not to say they do not have value as a learning tool as you begin to embrace playing piano for worship.

Okay... what bugs me about these books is the fact that in the piano part, the melody line is woven into the fabric of the piano music. But worship is not purely instrumental music. We sing worship more than merely playing worship music. Music accompanies worship. We do not play the melody lines over 99% of the time, especially during vocal sections.

So the arrangements will have to be pared down by the player after learning them, which will only be possible if you are taught how to do this. I have taught myself to do this, so don't have the issue.

Ironically, though, the keyboard players I work with in worship do not play these songs even remotely the way they are arranged here. They tend to listen to the recordings and pull their parts from what the original player is doing. But I recognize this is written for recreation, not for preparation to play worship at Church (though it is a good introduction to that idea).

Granted, this IS an easy play version. But I guarantee the "actual" arrangements you will buy in the normal book will not be a whole lot different. They'll weave the melody in the piano arrangement, it won't be "accurate" to what's on the record, and so on.

All that said... this is a good tool to get you moving forward. You will learn arrangements of songs, some of which you will actually play in worship. And because they're generally "easy", with a little tweaking, you can adapt the piano parts in part by referencing the chords written above the music to help you omit the melody line and create a more comping style approach.

So, if you're taking lessons, and have at least a year invested in playing, this book will work. But ask your teacher how to get rid of the melody line and adapt the chords into the "accompaniment" approach so you're supporting the melody, not playing it - except where it should be echoed between verses, at the beginning of the song, and maybe at the end.

Do that, and you can't lose.

Fun to play!

I took piano from third to fifth grade and then part of one year as an adult. This book is easy enough to not be too frustrating, but challenging enough that I have to practice for a while before playing a song effortlessly. I would say I am early intermediate level. I am at the end of Alfred book 3. (Not the adult lesson book). I took the book down to Staples and had them put it in spiral form (4.50?) and that made it much easier to turn the pages. I am really enjoying playing out of this book and my daughters say they enjoy hearing me play! Win! Win!
