Necessary Overkill

Passing the PMI-ACP exam is different from other certification exams that I've taken. The biggest difference was that I never had any questions that had me fill in a blank, pick a term from a list, or do a formula calculation. Instead, almost everything I was asked was along the lines of "This is the situation--what do you do?" and the right answer required me to be able to THINK in Agile.

I used the rmcproject.com book on the PMBOK for my PMP certification, so for the ACP, I came back to it again to see what it could offer. The truth is, this book is overkill. It covers way more material than you need to know to pass the exam, and it even says so in several places. But that's because, as I mention above, this exam is about needing to know a lot of things in order to rewire your thinking for some pretty tough questions.

There are a couple of times I think the author does a poor job of making examples through metaphor--the analogies don't quite fit, but you can get the general idea. There are also times the book goes a bit chart-happy and we have graphics that I don't feel are necessary to make a point. For example, I don't need a pair of overlapping curves on an X-Y diagram with pictures of CD-ROMs and books to understand that face-to-face communication has the highest value.

That said, I still do recommend this book. And I also STRONGLY recommend you use the latest edition of this book because the PMI-ACP exam changed in October of 2015. As luck would have it, I had to switch to this edition just as I was close to taking the exam--so I can tell you that yes, the new edition has been substantially modified in certain places. It's much thicker. The exam changed to be more about thinking in Agile, and some of the dialogue, particularly in the second half of the book, has been updated to reflect this.

Either way, I didn't have access to the exam simulation software that is also sold. So I can tell you that using the practice exams and sample exercises in each chapter is a great way to get what you need firmly in your head for the exam. I do recommend this book. It requires a lot of study and has a lot of potentially irrelevant pieces, but in that way it also makes for a very complete reference for the PMI-ACP exam.

Did what it was intended to do....help me pass the PMI-ACP !

I bought the Second Edition, because I took my test in Nov 2015 (and passed). The first version was for those people taking the test before November 2015. Most of the information I drew upon to answer questions came from this book (and experience of course). The book helped with the correct terminology. The book is very well written and very easy to understand. The reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is that the practice questions were not very similar to the real exam questions. Maybe it is the new test format since November or something, but only ~50% of the actual PMI-ACP exam questions were similar - in some way - to the practice questions in this book. More on the questions later. However, what is most important here is that I did pass, so this book obviously did something really, really well for me to pass :) I used the book as Mike instructed: I read the book once and did not do the end of chapter questions, then I read the book again, and did the questions. I have been using Agile for ~5 years, but I actually picked up more the 2nd time through. In addition to the book, I bought the flashcards and the Question Bank from www rmcls .com. I was not impressed with the flashcards because they had soooo much stuff on each one. I ended up making my own with 3x5 notecards that were better suited to quizzing myself one topic at a time. I also bought the question bank of questions. I bought Version 1 (Version 2 still not out), and am not sure I would spend that $100 again. The questions on the question bank required you to know so many details (exact working of 12 principles, exact wording of tools used in each stage of Retrospectives, etc..), but none of those specifics were on the actual test. Very strange. I memorized so much stuff because the practice questions required you to know so many specifics (not general questions like the book suggested), and then found the test did not need any of the specifics - just very general understanding of Agile. I was really disappointed with how few practice questions were actually similar to the real exam - after paying $100+. (Same problem with the 1000+ practice questions on the Exam Prep that is on the PMI website - but those questions were free to access for PMP members). [NOTE: I also used the PMI-ACP Agile Prepcast to get my 21 pre-req hours to be able to apply for the exam. Personally, I liked how Mike Griffiths presented the information in the book vs. Cornelius Fichtner in the Agile PrepCast. However, I needed the 21 hours. Cornelius does give much more information and details than Mike does.]. Anyway, back to the book. This book is very, very good! You can actually learn from this book, very simply written, good levels of both summary and detail where applicable. This book is easily useable for future reference (I will), and to help explain Agile to new team members, stakeholders, etc... It is definitely worth buying! Again, I could NOT have passed the exam without some help on nomeclature and common terms, and the best help I received was from this book! I did the whole purchase, prep, study, take exam in ~ 6 weeks. Definitely buy it for the exam or just a reference. If going for the exam, buy the book and look for some good quality practice questions. Good luck !

Excellent Resource

I used this book as the main driver for my preparation for my PMI-ACP exam. After taking the tests in this book, I gauged my weak points and read on those topics, using the other books in the PMI reference list. No problem at all passing the exam.

I highly recommend this book as the main resource for your certification preparation. The way the book was organized and presented is also quite light; not as simple as Rita’s for PMP, but still a very easy read and effective format.

Don't bother

Don't waste your money on this book or any "SEO" books written by Sean Odom, including those written under "pseudonyms", including Mike Monahan, Jason McCormick and Sean M. Farrell. These are all one and the same person which he uses to promote his multitude of SEO related businesses, giving the appearance not only of having multiple "SEO Experts" working for his companies but also of creating the illusion that his various companies are not actually related. Thus he can give the appearance of objectivity when, as one person/author, he "recommends" another of his business to readers/customers (which is basically any business or company or service he recommends aside from the obvious exceptions like Google and Microsoft). Extremely good information but full of grammatical errors and typos.

Sean is clearly an expert and I recommend this book even if you don't plan to optimise your site because it will show you what is required to raise your site's visitor numbers. Armed with the information, you can decide whether it's necessary and assess how many man-hours it might take. That's a useful piece of information if you need to negotiate a price for the work.

Sean does, however, assume a certain amount of knowledge on the reader's part. For example, if you've never heard of a "robots.txt" file, you might want to read a more basic manual first.

On the downside, the book has not been copy-edited. Considering that Sean insists that you should check your website for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation, it's disappointing to find that this book is full of such errors. Indeed, it lowers Sean's credibility and would make me think twice about letting him type anything on any of my sites. Basic mistakes such as the use of "your" instead of "you're" are especially worrying but there are also words missing, words duplicated and words misspelt - the combination of errors making some paragraphs difficult to understand. Frankly, this book is a "beta version" and should never have been released as it is. Please, Sean, get it fixed.

About the Author

Sir Terry Pratchett, OBE, was the author of more than 70 books, including the internationally bestselling Discworld series of novels. His books have been adapted for stage and screen, and he was the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal. In January 2009, Pratchett was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his services to literature. Sir Terry, who lived in England, died in March 2015 at the age of 66.

Start the Discworld series here

This is the third book in Pratchett's "Discworld" series and the first one I read more than ten years ago. Since then, Pratchett has gotten steadily better as a writer; his work, generally speaking, has gotten tighter and funnier at the same time that it shows more depth. Those of you who first encountered the Discworld later in the series will probably view Equal Rites as a less impressive effort. It is, after all, difficult to go back to the earlier work of an author whose recent books have given us such high expectations.
This is a shame, because unlike the first two books in the series, Equal Rites holds up fairly well on a second reading. The plot moves a little slowly in places, but the characterizations are rich and the story enjoyable. Gently (and sometimes not-so-gently) lampooning the trappings of Fantasy novels, Pratchett gives us a humorous and touching adventure that I found quite satisfying.
Though all of the books in the series can pretty much stand on their own with regards to both plot and character, there is something to be said for reading them in order. The reader gets to follow along with the author as an entire fictitious world materializes in his mind. I can't help but feel that the best time to meet a character is the first time he's presented to the reader, as is Granny Weatherwax in this book. Encountering her again in Wyrd Sisters and Witches Abroad is only that much more enjoyable.
I heartily recommend Equal Rites as an introduction to the Discworld. Then, I suggest you waste no time in finding Mort for an encore.

Fun, Fantasy & Equality

OK, I'm not used to reviewing novels, so you'll pardon me if my literary style is not up to scratch. This book was given to me by a friend who decided I had to read it. This is the third book in Pratchett's "Discworld" series. I haven't read any of the others and it was not necessary to do so in order to thoroughly enjoy this book.
In a different reality from ours, where the world is a flat disc supported on the back of a giant tortoise, lives a little girl named Esk who is mistakenly appointed a wizard in a world where females can't be wizards (it's against the lore). Granny tries to raise Esk in the way of witches instead, but finds she can't fight the fait accompli. Like it or not, Esk is meant to be a wizard.
The message of equal opportunity does not hit the reader over the head, although the message was probably more blatant a decade ago. Esk needs to go to wizard university in order to control her powers, but the university is just for males. Granny, the prim traditionalist, is against Esk doing all these "unnatural" things, but turns out in the end to be the biggest "feminist" of them all.
Along the way, there are fun, good humour, smiles, ethereal monsters, flying books and orang-utan librarians.

Witchcraft vs. wizardry on Discworld

When Eskarina was born she was bestowed with a dying wizard's magic staff and his powers because the wizard mistakenly thought she was the eighth son of an eighth son. Granny Weatherwax, the town witch who delivered young Esk, knows that the girl must now learn to control the extraordinary powers she has been bequeathed before they start to control her. She takes Esk under her wing and begins to teach her about witchcraft and magic. After Esk has had several years of apprenticeship, Granny decides to enroll Esk in Unseen University, the training ground for wizards. The two of them set off for Ankh-Morpork, the home of the famous wizard school. But everyone in Discworld knows that wizardry is the bastion of men and that a woman can never become a wizard... or can she?

In "Equal Rites," Terry Pratchett parodies gender stereotyping and discrimination as Esk is confronted with society's view of the differences between witchcraft, a traditionally feminine profession, and wizardry, an exclusively male domain. As Granny sees it, wizardry is high magic composed of science, "jommetry" and power, while witchcraft is a magic grounded in nature, herbs and "headology." Esk feels she can handle either type of magic and she turns wizardry on its ear as she proceeds to demonstrate what she can accomplish. Before reading this book, I thought that Rincewind was the most bumbling of wizards. I now realize that Unseen University is full of them!

This book is not as wickedly funny as the two books that precede it, but it does contain several humorous scenes such as the magic conjuring duel between Granny and the Archchancellor of the university. Although Pratchettisms are sprinkled here and there throughout the book, the story line takes precedence over the satire. Sometimes the metaphorical descriptions of the landscape and sunlight of Discworld go a bit overboard. As a result I give the book only four stars instead of the five I gave the previous books in the series. I did enjoy the story, however, especially the characterization of strong-minded and wise Granny, who is depicted as a non-stereotypical witch who abhors flying on broomsticks and who looks down upon the traditional fortune telling and parlor tricks favored by so many other witches. I look forward to reading the other Discworld witch books.

About the Author
LANDON J. NAPOLEON is the award-winning and critically acclaimed author of fiction and nonfiction books. He has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Arizona State University, a master's degree in creative writing from University of Glasgow in Scotland, and has been an author for more than two decades.

If this story was not true you would not beleive it was possible

As a former Phoenix Police Department Reserve Officer and Arizona Attorney General Special Agent of twenty-five years, I had followed the story of PPD Officer Jason Schechterle after his horrifying accident and near death when the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor patrol car he was driving was hit in the rear and exploded into a fire ball nearly killing him. But, I had no idea what a truly amazing man he is until meeting him in person and reading this book. Author Landon J. Napoleon has perfectly captured the extraordinary and almost unbelievable story of this funny, intelligent, thoughtful and dedicated police officer and his beautiful and amazing wife as they dealt with the disfiguring and incapacitating injuries of the fourth degree burns of his face, arms and hands. Author Napoleon clearly knows Jason and captures his voice as well as the humorous way police officers look at their world. The secondary story is the very real and tragic way the Ford executives refused to acknowledge that their Crown Victoria was fatally flawed even as numerous police officers and troopers were burned alive in those cars. You will probably cry as you read parts of this book, but you will also laugh and in the end you will get to share the triumphant ending of both stories.

I co-hosted the first event since this book came out - The Casa Blanca Book Club in Scottsdale, Arizona on Wednesday, February 26th. My phone has been ringing off the hook ever since. This is a must read book about someone, by all rights , who should not be alive today. Jason is the most inspirational person I have ever met (after about some 57 surgeries to rebuild his face). Landon Napoleon is an outstanding author who everybody will be talking about for years to come and a real rising star.

Anyone who is thinking about serving their local community or their country should read this book. Or anyone who has just found themselves in a rut and needs a slap-in-the-face reminder of the real world going on around them. It reminds us of the strength of the human spirit that is in each of us if we have the courage to follow it, and it shapes the perspective on life to better align it which the most important values we have: love and sacrifice. Great read. Powerful message made without doing anything more than telling the story of one family’s perseverance through the unthinkable.
